MLT Houston Success

"The MLT-Houston Fellows program is truly distinctive in that
students are treated with the same interest and respect given to
adults. This approach is key to empowering the youth of Houston to
become proactive and involved in the future of our city. The program
not only teaches us new skills, but encourages the Fellows to find out
answers for ourselves through collaboration with our peers. I developed
a close network of talented Houston peers by participating in the
events throughout the year.
"My advice to new Fellows joining
the program is simply: Don't ignore or take for granted how unique this
program is. Take advantage of all the many opportunities that the
program offers. And don't be afraid to think, collaborate, and discuss
on a larger scale."

“The MLT program has impacted me in ways I would never have believed. I
have made new friends and been given the opportunity to see businesses
and the city of Houston for what they are. For instance, I now
understand what it really takes to successfully run a NBA team. The
experiences with MLT have been priceless! I'd recommend MLT to anybody
who is serious about furthering his or her education and who has the
commitment to excel."

I was a member of the first Junior Leadership Initiative. I am enjoying college life so much, between the work load and extracurricular activities, I do not have time to miss being home. My first round of tests have come back and they are all A's and B's which is just more encouragement to keep working hard. I am currently taking a class called Freshman Business Initiative which kind of reminds me of the MLT forum in that it is a lot of skill building through small groups, working as a team is emphasized a lot. We have a Monday small group and then Wednesday lectures with the rest of the freshman business students. Taking this class has made me so appreciative of the Junior Leadership Initiative because I feel like I already have a step ahead on everyone and it is only freshman year. Every person I tell about the experience, whether it is a professor or classmate, is so impressed and envious that I have already begun networking so early on.
